Why You’re Losing the Buy Box on Your Own Product

It’s your brand, so why is a stranger winning the sale? What decides the Amazon Buy Box and how brand owners win it back without racing to the bottom.

It’s your product, your brand and your listing. So why does the “Add to Cart” button send the sale to someone else?

Because on Amazon, owning the brand doesn’t earn you the sale. The Buy Box, which Amazon now calls the Featured Offer, goes to whichever eligible seller Amazon’s system thinks gives the customer the best deal at that moment. Most shoppers never look past it, so if you’re not the Featured Offer, you’re mostly invisible on your own page.

What decides who wins

Amazon doesn’t publish the formula, but the main factors are well understood:

  • Price, including shipping. The biggest single factor in most categories.
  • Fulfillment and delivery speed. FBA and fast, reliable shipping help.
  • Seller performance. Order defect rate, late shipments, cancellations, customer feedback.
  • In-stock status. If you run out, someone else wins by default.

Notice what isn’t on the list: being the brand owner.

Why brand owners lose

In our experience, the usual pattern goes like this. You’re priced at your policy. Unauthorized sellers are below it, often well below, clearing diverted or discounted stock. Amazon’s system sees their offer as the better deal and hands them the Featured Offer. In our sample scan, a brand’s own account was losing the sale 61 percent of the day.

The other common causes are running out of stock, slow shipping from your own warehouse, or account health problems.

Why cutting your price isn’t the answer

Matching the lowest seller wins the Buy Box for a day. Then they drop again, your dealers see you undercutting them, and your price is permanently lower. You’re paying the gray market’s discount out of your own margin.

How to win it back

  1. Remove the cheap offers at the source. Identify who’s selling and cut off the supply. See how to remove unauthorized sellers on Amazon.
  2. Stay in stock. Especially heading into your busy season. See Amazon seasonal inventory planning.
  3. Fix fulfillment. Use FBA or meet fast-shipping standards if you ship yourself.
  4. Protect account health. Watch defect rate, late shipments and cancellations.
  5. Watch off-Amazon pricing. If your product is cheaper on another major site, Amazon may pull the Buy Box entirely. See does Amazon enforce MAP.

It also affects your ads

Sponsored Products ads generally only show when you hold the Featured Offer. Lose it, and the ads you’re paying for can stop showing or send traffic to a page where someone else gets the sale. That’s one reason we fix pricing before touching ad spend. See why Amazon ad spend keeps rising while sales stay flat.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my Buy Box percentage?

In Seller Central, the Detail Page Sales and Traffic business report shows Featured Offer percentage by product.

Does Brand Registry give me the Buy Box?

No. It helps protect your listing content, not win the sale.

Can Amazon remove the Buy Box completely?

Yes. If Amazon finds the price uncompetitive, including against other websites, it can suppress the Featured Offer.
